Satin

Description

Satin rats are hard to recognize until you see one as a baby. Their fur is slightly longer than standard coats, especially the guard hairs, and has a lustrous, glossy shine to it - however, it is not a slick and polished coat that lies down smooth and flat. The hairs are finer and somewhat thinner than a standard coat. As kittens, Satin rats tend to look "greasy" or "oily" and to stand up in all directions as though the rat were wet and brushed backwards. This coat tames somewhat as they age, but should still remain distinct from a standard coat. The whiskers, especially on a younger Satin, tend to curl at the tips in a gentle outward bend; this is most noticable on the "eyebrow" hairs of an adult - this is not the full curl of a Rex whisker, however. Lighter colors, especially white and colorpoint, may have a yellowish cast to them.

Genetics

sa/sa

Satin rats were first bred in California, and they are a simple double recessive. Two Satin rats will have an entirely Satin litter.

"Fine to the touch, with longer and softer guard hairs that give an overall glossy look or sheen. Satin lends some colors a sparkling appearance, and a yellowish cast on white and Siamese. Whiskers to be wavy and point in varying directions."
