Dumbo Ears

Description

Dumbo Ears were also known as "Elephant Ears" when they first appeared on the scene, and with good reason. Dumbo ears are wide, round, and set on the sides of the head. Ideally, a Dumbo ear should resemble a plate held to the side of the head. They should be free of wrinkles, folds, creases, notches or tears. They should also not curl into tubes, but should remain wide open. They should be pink, though they will be a dark purplish-pink on a black rat and a pale pink on a white rat, with shading in between depending on the body color of the rat. They should be covered with fine hairs which should match the color of the rat's body fur, though it will have a more silvery sheen. They should ideally have some substance to them rather than being paper-thin.

Genetics

du/du

Dumbo is a simple recessive. Breeding two Dumbos together will yeild 100% Dumbo babies.

Standards

AFRMA

"Dumbo rats to be shown in any recognized color, marking, or variety. The distinguishing feature being their low ear set. The ears are large and round, set low on the sides of the head. Head to form an equilateral triangle when viewed from above."

RSA

"Large, round, set low on the sides of the head. When viewed from the side ideal placement should be below the midline of the eye.

Faults: ears pointed at the edges, creases or folds, too small, set too high, oblong/tubular shaped."

RatsPacNW

"Large, roundish ears, set lower on the head.  Round ears should show no prominent point, heavy folds or creases. Poor shape includes "tubular" ears, butterfly or elephant shaped.  The body type on a dumbo may be more stocky."

URS

"Ears to be large, round, and semicircular, set low on the sides of the head, and pointing back toward the body, maintaining a picture of balance, while ideally being placed as low as possible on the head.

Faults: Creases or folds; pointing down, so as to give an oblong or tubular shape, pointed edges, set too high or too low."
